Organize Rooms, Cages, And Barn Layouts
Set up rooms and housing in one Rabbitry workspace, switch between Map and List, and use History for movement records.
Use the Cages area to reflect your real barn layout and assign rabbits in the way that best fits how you work.

Desktop: Open Cages from the left sidebar.
Mobile: Tap the menu button, then tap Cages.
- Decide whether you want to create rooms first or keep a simpler cage-only layout.
- Make sure the rabbits you want to assign already exist in Rabbits.
Overview
- The Cages page has Rabbitry and History sections. Rabbitry can be shown as a spatial Map or a management List, with the same search and cage or colony inspector in both. History is the movement log. A single cage can hold more than one rabbit when that matches your real setup.
When To Use
- You want to organize rooms and cages, print a map or cage report, assign rabbits to housing, or review where rabbits have been.
Step-By-Step Guide
Open Cages and set up the layout
Start in the housing area itself.
Open Cages from the sidebar or mobile menu.
- You should see Rabbitry and History sections, a Map/List switch, search, Insights, and Add Room.
Use Add Room first if you want grouped barn areas, then add or edit cages inside those room sections. Switch Rabbitry to Map and use Edit layout when you want racks, aisles, or a custom grid.
- List is the quickest place for bulk record management. Map uses rooms to create its blueprints. Aisles, doors, windows, and labels are visual only and are not assignment targets.
- Your barn layout now has a digital home in the Cages section.
Assign rabbits in the workflow that feels easiest
Rabbitry Run supports more than one assignment path on purpose.
Open a cage or colony from either display and choose Assign in the shared inspector. You can also drag a rabbit from one unit to another in Map. Reason, notes, and effective date are optional.
- You should see the same inspector in Map and List. After saving, the rabbit should appear under that housing unit and History should show the move.
Open the rabbit record in Rabbits and use the Cage Assignment field on the rabbit profile when it is more natural to assign housing from the rabbit side. Housing History appears under those fields.
- You should be able to save the rabbit with a cage selected from the Cage Assignment field.
If your real setup houses more than one rabbit together, you can assign multiple rabbits to the same cage record.
- Do not create fake duplicate cages just to represent shared occupancy when one real cage is being used.
Open History for the rabbitry-wide log, or open a cage or colony in Map or List and choose History for its occupancy timeline, including empty spans.
- Existing assignments are labeled as recorded when housing history started. That label is not a born-in date.
- You know both assignment paths and you know one cage can hold multiple rabbits.
You're Done When
- You can open Cages and find your rooms or cages there.
- You know how to open a cage or colony from Map or List and assign a rabbit in the shared inspector.
- You know the rabbit profile also has a Cage Assignment field.
- You can open the History tab and see recent housing moves.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking each cage can only hold one rabbit when your workflow needs group housing or shared grow-out space.
- Forgetting that assignments can be made from either the Cages page or the rabbit profile.
- Treating map racks, aisles, doors, or labels as places you can assign rabbits. Those are visual only.
FAQ
Can I use cages without rooms?
Existing housing records are preserved, but rooms make both Rabbitry Map and List easier to organize as the rabbitry grows.
What happens if a cage no longer belongs to an active room?
Cages without a current room still remain in your housing data, and they appear in the printable cage report under Unassigned Room so they do not get lost during cleanup or migration work.
Does housing history replace the current cage assignment?
No. The rabbit still has a current cage or colony. History is the timeline behind that current location. Existing assignments are labeled as recorded when housing history started, not as a born-in date.
Does the map change where rabbits live?
Dragging a cage in Edit layout only changes the room blueprint. Dragging a rabbit in Map, or assigning from the shared cage or colony inspector, records a housing move. Aisles, doors, windows, and labels are not assignment targets.
What is the grow-out forecast?
Rabbitry Insights shows a 30-day estimate of upcoming kits versus empty advisory capacity. It does not move rabbits for you.
Does shared housing overlap mean disease spread?
No. Overlap in Health Reports Housing & Exposure is a possible connection from the movement log, not a cause.
When To Contact Support
- Assignments save but do not remain attached to the cage after refresh.
- The same rabbit appears assigned incorrectly even after you re-save the cage or rabbit profile.
